This is the second time i’m going to break the trend of pictures, just for Singapore.

This was what a friend told me, and my, so true! In the Table Tennis Women Team Semi finals, Tian Wei shone. Who would have thought that our Singapore team could bring us so many surprises??? Especially the youngsters! Kudos to them for all that hardwork.

Following Tao Li’s commendable effort from the 100m fly, the trio who played for the table tennis women team did just what they needed in the round robin. Jiawei did just right by winning all her matches 3-0 against her opponents. Being the captain, she really did well, and i must say that Jiawei really improved alot! For once, i saw that agressiveness, that hunger for a medal, and the strength to lead a team. Yue Gu didnt have much chance to show herself because we won straight 3-0 for all three matches. Same for Tian Wei who did just what she needed to do.

Now, here comes the exciting part. The semi finals. The reason why it is exciting is because it was the only match we could watch. The previous three matches werent shown. awww…. Singapore vs S Korea. That was a bit unlucky because S Korea’s defence could just take the patience off you. And there is Kim who defeated Jiawei four years ago. Knowing Jiawei, it would be a tough match for her. HK would be a little easier, but that’s all not important now.

Tian Wei won our first match 3-0. No, not luck. It is the first time i witnessed her capabilities. She shone, just when we needed her to. Jia Wei was a little unlucky. As compared to Tian Wei, her mental strength is not enough. Though Jiawei lost and her confidence was at her lowest, i thought Jiawei did tremendous by holding back her emotions as a doubles player, a team member and a captain. And yes, she won the doubles together with Yue Gu. Yue Gu really held on to the match and led Jiawei back. This is called “qi xin” as mentioned by Jiawei in that interview before the match. Yue Gu lost her singles and brought the team score to 2-2. Personally, i thought better of Yue Gu, but luck and pressure do make people falter. After all, it was Yue Gu’s first appearance in the olympics. The last and final match made Tian Wei the heroine of Singapore. She held on to all the pressure, irritance and displayed great patience and strength. And YES! Singapore finally gets a medal after 48 years!!!

Three Cheers to the team!

First Cheer for Wang Yue Gu, for holding on well for the doubles and bringing back that point for SG.

Second Cheer for Li Jia Wei, for putting those emotions behind her and working hand in hand with Yue Gu. For defeating Kim in the doubles and at least, redeemed herself for that lost point which was almost hers. For leading the SG team. Bittersweet revenge.

Third Cheer for Feng Tian Wei, for grittingly holding on for Singapore. World ranking 9th and third in the SG team, she outshone everyone and performed her best, giving pressure to the S Koreans and confidence to all Singaporeans in the first match and then wrapping up with sheer determination. She knew she couldnt bear to disappoint and she did just what she needed to do. I salute you for pushing yourself to the limits!

The finals this evening would be the easiest and the toughest. Easiest because the team is guaranteed a medal and the pressure is finally off. Toughest because the China team is close to being invincible. Nevertheless, well done to the SG team and all the best for the finals. Anything better than a 3-0 thrash would be worth celebrating. But well, you never know.
